More Able, Gifted and Talented

Who’s responsible for Gifted and Talented?

The More Able, Gifted & Talented provision is led by Aine McGlue, an Associate Assistant Principal.

What is Gifted and Talented?

Gifted are learners who have the ability to excel academically.

Talented are learners who have the ability to excel in practical skills, the arts and sport.

How do we identify Gift and Talented Students?

We work within the DFES definition of Gifted and Talented students, representing the top 5 -10% most able students in each year group.

More Able Criteria: 117+ CATS

Gifted Criteria: L5+ across KS2 SATS

Talented Criteria: Teacher identified exceptional ability

A shadow cohort has been produced, to highlight those students who excel in a particular faculty area, but may not have been identified earlier.

The More Able, Gifted and Talented Provision

We aim to ensure that each student reaches his or her potential and a life-long love of learning and intellectual resourcefulness by:

• Promoting the acceleration of learning and ensure that appropriate opportunities are in place for students to progress in line with their abilities rather than their age.

• Schemes of work to include provision for the very able, including extension activity, independent study, and open ended lines of enquiry based on higher order thinking skills.

• Lesson planning takes account of the need for challenge and a variety of learning strategies.

• Enrich the curriculum through activities including trips, visits, master classes and summer schools.

• Involving students in target-setting and self-assessment procedures that will allow them to take an increased responsibility for their learning.
