Halfords help Sir Herbert Leon pupils get cycling

Sir Herbert Leon Academy pupils now have 20 new Bradley Wiggins bicycles to learn how to cycle on thanks to a generous package from Halfords in Milton Keynes.

The bikes will be used in PE lessons, the Duke of Edinburgh programme, and for Bikeability cycle training courses held at the school teaching children how to stay fit and healthy and safe when out and about on the roads.

The Council has been working closely with Sir Herbert Leon Academy over the past year to get students involved in the Bikeability programme. With the arrival of the 20 new bikes, students can now begin their free cycle safety training courses.

Assistant Principal Ben Eley said: "This would not have been possible without the help and support of the Bikeability programme and especially John Davis, whose experience has been invaluable in helping us to secure this deal with Halfords.

“For our students to be riding on a Bradley Wiggins bike after his personal success and the success of Team GB cyclists at the Olympics in Rio, is fantastic and will hopefully inspire our students and the children of the local community to earn their own stripes."

Principal, Dr Jo Trevenna, added "Following our successful exam results this summer, the academy is determined to continue to develop our students both inside and outside of the classroom. Having a set of high quality bicycles allows us to teach students from our school, as well as our local Primary schools, the practical skills and understanding that will enable them to cycle with confidence on today's roads."

Bikeability is a government backed initiative that delivers cycle training to over one million children nationwide.

Milton Keynes Council is keen to get parents and teachers on board too, with adult and family cycle training and basic bike maintenance courses available to all MK residents. Basic bike courses are being delivered by renowned and brilliant Cytech Trainer Sam Darling. Ride leader training is also available in November and January to support individuals in setting up their own cycling groups.
