Students given insight to construction industry through John Sisk & Son led refurb

Monday 10th December 2018:
Sir Herbert Leon Academy (SHL Academy) has celebrated the reopening of its construction workshop, thanks to the help and support of leading construction firm John Sisk & Son and its supply chain partners. SHL Academy is part of AET, the largest academy trust in the country.

The newly refurbished workshop was officially opened by the Mayor of Milton Keynes, Councillor Martin Petchey and Stephen Bowcott, CEO of John Sisk & Son.

John Sisk & Son first engaged with the SHL Academy in Milton Keynes in December 2017. The construction workshop was in need of repair and all related courses had been closed some years ago.

The project delivered involved a total of 25 workers on site and included installing new walls, floor topping, new carpets, new staircase, new heating and cooling system, new kitchen, work benches, lockers, new windows and external doors. The most outstanding features of this project are a new staircase and new moveable walls that allow for more work space as and when required for the students.

Speaking at the event Stephen Bowcott, CEO of John Sisk & Son said:

“At Sisk we are very proud to celebrate this completed project between ourselves and SHL Academy, who have been a pleasure to work with. Immediately, we wanted Sisk to be part of the success story, working with the Academy to breathe new life into the workshop and create a platform for the pupils to join our Industry. Our people are at the heart of our business and this new workshop marks a fantastic achievement by all involved in the project.”

Dr. Jo Trevenna, Principal, Sir Herbert Leon Academy said:

“This project typifies our determination to offer our students a range of high quality vocational as well as academic pathways. The exceptional workmanship of the refurbishment sets the highest standards and increases expectations of what our students can achieve. In addition, our students will benefit significantly from understanding and accessing future pathways that may lead to successful and satisfying careers within the construction industry. At SHL Academy, we are committed to providing an education that helps our students go on to lead remarkable lives, and by working with organisations like Sisk, we can offer genuinely life-changing opportunities for our students. ”

It is also very fitting that carpentry & joinery apprentices from John Sisk & Son’s own joinery training centre in Dublin have contributed to this project, making some fantastic quality work benches, lockers and storage units.

Mr Bowcott added: “At Sisk we have a passion and desire to raise the profile of construction as a career of choice for youngsters. We have a great history investing in apprentices and our fantastic graduate development programme and we are keen to go deeper – work closely with schools and share what exciting, rewarding careers are available. This facility will create a positive environment and a stepping stone for the students in the school to a career in our construction industry.”
