Sir Herbert Leon Academy Students have their say at Youth Cabinet Conference

On Friday 22nd January, representatives of Sir Herbert Leon’s Student Voice team from Year 7 and 8 were invited to attend the annual MySayMK Conference at the Milton Keynes Civic Offices. The conference was led by the Youth Cabinet for Milton Keynes and we are proud to announce that among their number was Rosie Anderson-Iwasiw, a Year 11 student who was elected onto the cabinet earlier in the year.

Representatives from Student Councils across the borough were in attendance to give their opinion on a number of issues affecting children and young people in Milton Keynes.  Topics for discussion included changes to local bus routes, public transport fare increases, the quality of drug and alcohol training in schools and also LGBT awareness.

Not only was this a fantastic opportunity for SHLA's Student Voice to be involved in some heated debate with other schools, but they also met the Mayor of Milton Keynes and participated in an information fair about local initiatives, including personal safety workshops and volunteering programmes. The students in attendance were a real credit to Sir Herbert Leon Academy and impressed organisers at the event with their enthusiasm and thoughtful contributions to discussion. A great day was had by all and the free goodie bag was an added bonus!
